When you begin working with an experienced photographer, modelling becomes so much more than a superficial pretty face on a page.
Is modelling right for you?
During my work as a photographer, I have come across many girls, boys and parents asking me if this could be the career for them. I have been asked:
- What are the requirements to be a model?
- What are the different types of modelling and which am I most suited to?
- How can I get work as a model?
- Where do I start?
Don’t worry, those are the questions I was asking myself when I embarked on my own modelling career. At the tender age of 15, in my youthful naivety, I have decided that modelling was what I wanted to do. So I went hell for leather after it.
As with everything it wasn’t as easy as I thought and there was a lot to learn! Along the way I have made a lot of mistakes and bad decisions. However, as I gained experience and knowledge of the industry I became more successful and got to travel around the world doing what I loved and building my modelling career. Modelling portfolio takes time to build and it’s forever revolving. It shows your latest work in fashion, editorial modelling.
Now I have used my experience of the modelling world to get behind the camera and become a photographer. This means I can not only take great shots to kick-start your modelling portfolio but also share the experience that I was so sadly lacking when I started.
While there is a lot I can share and teach you it is not some magic pill that will suddenly turn you into the next Giselle or David Gandy. It will take work, commitment and sometimes disappointment so you must decide if modelling is for you and decide if you are you suitable?
During our shoot, you’ll get a chance to ask me questions and share any worries you might have about modelling. You will also get an idea of how life is on the set of a professional shoot and I will also be able to give you and honest opinion on your suitability and what you need to work on.
Maybe you’d even like me to get in touch with agencies on your behalf or act as your agent?
What is essential to make a fashion or editorial modelling into a career?
Outgoing personality is a must if you want to get booked over and over again. You need to be confident (even though there is plenty of criticism or you might come across un-pleasantries), ambitious, hard working and very professional. Being shy or nervous simply will not work. During castings, photo shoots and/or catwalk you need to be able to express yourself and let your personality standout.
Today’s modelling market is available to everyone. Clients are looking for various body shapes and sizes. It’s no longer venture limited to those tall and skinny. There are plenty of modelling types and if you are struggling to decide which area suits you best I can advise and talk to you in more detail. I’m here to help! Whether it is commercial, fashion, glamour, plus size, swimsuit/lingerie or any other you need your modelling portfolio to showcase your abilities to clients within. The competition is fierce and you need to understand that you won’t be suitable for every job. Hard work, and understanding your market are a must. You will also need a great portfolio, be versatile, organised and pleasant to work with. Remember there is nothing stopping you to succeed!
